Wrekin Star Judo Club was established in 1965 by the late John Goodwin ‘2nd Dan’. As Telford’s only surviving judo club, it is affiliated to the British Judo Association (BJA).
We provide expert training in the martial art & Olympic sport of judo for both adults and children from the age of six.
Between them, our coaches have been practicing judo for over 200 years and have over 100 years coaching experience.
There are no barriers to learning judo!
Judo is a social activity that can help you make new friends and connect with like-minded people. By training with others, you can develop a sense of camaraderie and community that can be both rewarding and motivating. Our club is run solely by volunteers including the coaches, players and parents who together run the committee and organize social events for players and their families.
Head Coach Gareth Mapp is a 5th Dan Black Belt and Level 3 Coach.
He has been involved in judo for over 50 years and first qualified as a Level 2 Coach at the age of 18. Gareth competed at National and International level

What happens when I turn up?
A good martial arts school knows that the most important task is looking after our newcomers, after all, the first step is the biggest and most important!
One of our friendly coaches will greet you to give you an overview of the class and venue, check a few quick details and introduce you to our warm and welcoming family.
Please wear tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt to your first class and we will provide a suit (or ‘Gi’) for you to borrow. If you have an existing martial arts uniform, bring it as it may be fine to wear (white or blue only though please), and also a flat drink in a bottle. Finally, please make us aware of any medical conditions (such as Asthma for example).
Pricing;
First lesson is always FREE, and your insurance is not required for 4 sessions, to make sure you’re enjoying it. After that classes are priced at £5 for children and £6 for adults.
Membership/Insurance is obtained via the British Judo Association (click Link), but let us now of any questions.
Suits can be obtained from the club or independently and can start from as low as £20. There is no need to wear any branded suits to our club, as long as they are Judo (or BJJ) suits and you are welcome to use any second hand suits etc brought online.
